Sunday 28th April 1996 – Australia’s most deadly civilian mass shooting took place in Port Arthur in Tasmania

The massacre left 35 people dead and many injured. Within four months of the tragedy, the Government led by Prime Minister John Howard orchestrated a tightening of Australia’s state and territory gun laws. During the buyback that was introduced- more than 700 000 firearms were surrendered to the police and destroyed.
