Millions of Aussies claim work-related car expenses. Here are the most common mistakes
The end of the financial year is fast approaching and if you’re behind on your car expenses, you’ll need to get them up-to-date pretty quickly.
Every year around 3.5 million Australians claim work-related car expenses.
So what is and what isn’t a legitimate claim?
Assistant Commissioner at the Australian Tax Office Kath Anderson tells Ross Greenwood what the common mistakes are.
“One of the most common mistakes we see is people claiming private travel like their home to work trip.
“The reality is for most people, home to work travel isn’t deductible.
“Another mistake some people make is thinking they’re entitled to five thousand kilometers as a standard deduction under the cents per kilometre method.
“It’s not a free ride. You have to have actually done the travel and, of course, you need a record to support your claim.”
