The federal government has announced a $47-million boost to mental health funding as the issue continues to grip the nation.

Youth mental health organisation Headspace will receive the bulk of the funding to help run its 107 support centres across the country.

An estimated 560,000 Australian children and adolescents have a mental illness and one in four young Australians aged 16 to 24 experience mental illness in any given year.

And that number is on the rise.

Health Minister Greg Hunt joins Steve Price to discuss the situation and the significant increase in funding.
