More than 800 new citizens from 75 countries will take part in Brisbane’s biggest citizenship ceremony tonight.

The event is being held at the Royal International Convention Centre.

The top five nations being represented are India, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Philippines and China.

Nine News reporter Alex Heinke crossed to Sofie Formica from Victoria Park, where the rain had set in, but Brisbanites were still enjoying the celebrations.

He said some events had been cancelled this year, including the Australia Day cockroach races at the Story Bridge Hotel, which has been postponed.

Fireworks won’t take place at South Bank, he said.

“It’s worth noting people will have to check in and wear masks at masks of these celebrations, at least the official ones.”
