91yo champion walker Heather Lee is speeding up, not slowing down
At 91-years-old, champion walker Heather Lee is speeding up, not slowing down.
Ms Lee was well into her eighties when she decided she wanted to turn her passion for walking into something more.
In 2011, at 84-years-old, she competed at her first Masters Athletic Games and smashed records. She hasn’t taken her foot off the pedal since.
“When my husband died I was motivated to walk,” she tells John Stanley.
“Not just walk to smell the flowers but walk quickly and I felt better that way. I think that’s where it all began.”
Heather doesn’t just walk to compete, she also laces up her running shoes to do her bit for charity.
She says her husband’s dying words spur her on.
“His last words to me were, ‘Now’s the time to show your mettle’. And if that’s not a clarion call, I don’t know what is.
“Even now, it makes my hair stand on end.”

This weekend, Heather will embark on her 15th Hawkesbury Relay for Life which raises money for the Cancer Council. She’s aiming to reach a whopping 100,000 steps over 24 hours.
