More than 50 blazes are burning across Queensland with crews preparing for conditions to worsen.

A state of emergency has been declared with at least nine homes destroyed and 57 bushfires active across the state, including four at a Watch and Act alert level.

The blaze at Cobraball, west of Yeppoon in central Queensland, remains the biggest concern and multiple fires are burning in the Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim.

QFES Acting Deputy Commissioner Steve Smith says they’ve called in reinforcements to help get the situation under control.

“We’ve got some support coming in from New Zealand this morning, that will be moving into the north coast areas.

“And we’ve got some additional requests that will be coming in over the next couple of days to provide further support.”

Conditions are set to worsen on Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday, with winds expected to peak at 40km/h and temperatures forecast to reach the high 30s in some areas.

Brisbane is one of 42 local governments where a state of emergency has been declared, with residents urged to stay indoors due to extremely poor air quality.

Now Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner is warning bushfires could hit the city.
