Talking about Skoda now part of the Volkswagen Group and sharing platforms with VW models. I’ve just tested the Skoda Karoq five-seat SUV’s – the uprated 1.4-litre turbo 8-speed automatic 110TSi front-wheel-drive currently $35,990 drive-away and the new 2.0-litre turbo 140TSI 7-speed auto Sportline all-wheel-drive from $45,990 drive-way. For my money the 110TSi is the best value with its VarioFlex seating allowing the three back seats to be independently folded and even removed – a cleverly thought-out feature, great for a small family and a feature that the more powerful Karoq doesn’t have.

To me the Skoda Karoq is a little more individual to the VW Tiquan on which it’s based, its styling appealing with a standalone range of colours. Nice steering response with good off-centre feel and very clear instrumentation. A five star ANCAP crash safety rating, five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and the option of two pre- paid service packs – three years for $800 or five-years for $1400. Economy wise I managed 7.1 L/100km with varied city/country driving – as I said the 110 TSI is more family skewed, the 140TSI Sportline more the driver’s SUV and with all wheel drive quite accomplished. Three option packs become rather expensive: a Premium pack, Travel pack and Tech pack can add as much as $8,500 some items of which one could argue should be standard fare.
