The Transport Workers Union has renewed a push for security screens on all buses after a driver was struck in the face with an unknown chemical substance in Loganholme this morning.

There were no passengers on board the bus when the man was hit by the substance, which was thrown through the driver-side window.

The incident occurred at around 9.30am on Drews Road.

The man was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital.

Initially it was feared it could be acid, although it appears to be a less serious substance.

Queensland branch secretary of the TWU, Peter Biagini, told Scott Emerson there were “constant attacks on bus drivers every day”.

Scott said it was abhorrent.

“I understand he is stable now, obviously a bit shaken up about it, because you never know what that substance could be, and that’s why they had to race him to hospital, to check what effect it had on him,” Mr Biagini said.

He has renewed the push for security screens on all buses.

“Every new bus that enters the system should have a security screen, that’s a great start and then slowly retrofit them.”

Police are appealing for any members of the public who have dashcam or CCTV footage in and around Drews Road and Jalan Street between 9am and 10am to come forward.
