League legends and Cam Smith team mates celebrate ‘one of the greats’
Former teammates of Cameron Smith have honoured “one of the best players” in the modern era, as he announces his retirement from NRL.
The 37-year-old star, often mentioned among the game’s greatest ever players, will not return to the Storm or professional rugby league, the club announced on social media.
Among his numerous achievements, Smith is the only NRL player to have played more than 400 matches, and holds the record for highest point scorer and most goals kicked.
Smith declared his career decision on the eve of his club’s first match of the 2021 Premiership, at the unveiling of his bronze statue at AAMI Park.
He told media he made his choice only a week ago, but will remain involved in the NRL in some capacity after a break.
“I was very fortunate to be a part of such a wonderful organisation, filled with many great footballers but great people as well.
“It felt like the right time to finish.”
Former teammates and league legends Sam Thaiday and Johnathan Thurston both paid tribute to “one of the greats” with Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive.
Thaiday, who won ten series and a World Cup with Smith, said he was in the top 5 players he has played with.
“Cam is definitely up there with one of the best I have ever played with. He will go down in history as one of the greatest to ever play our game, not just in the modern era.”
JT said he was surprised by the decision.
“I am surprised that he did, I thought he would have went around again, whether that was at the Titans or the Broncos, but look what a career. He is the greatest I have seen.”
