NRL aiming for a Brisbane grand final despite fears over two new COVID clusters
The NRL is still confident Brisbane will host the NRL grand final this Sunday.
More than 52,000 people are expected to pack into Suncorp Stadium to watch the Rabbitohs and Panthers go head-to-head.
But there are concerns the game could be forced to relocate after four COVID cases were announced in Brisbane this morning, and the south-east narrowly avoided a lockdown.
The game could be moved to Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville.
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said they have to be ready for either scenario.
“At this stage we are on track to play the grand final at Suncorp Stadium,” he told Scott Emerson.
“We are very excited about it, this is 114 years of history and this is a great opportunity for our fans in Queensland.
“If there is a lockdown, and if there’s an outbreak that gets exponentially worse, we will be very respectful of that and work with the Queensland government on alternative arrangements.”
He said there were other options, including either moving the grand final or playing in front of a reduced crowd.
A decision would need to be made soon, he said.
“I would imagine by Friday we would need to have our plans in place.”
