Michael is joined by Samantha Elley, journalist, historian and editor of the website ‘Tales From The Grave’, about the fascinating life Sir Edward Hallstrom.

Sir Edward John Lees Hallstrom (25 September 1886 – 27 February 1970) was one of Australia’s best-known philanthropists, zoological park administrator and businessmen of the mid 20th century.

Hallstrom revolutionised food storage, particularly in the outback, with his kerosene powered refrigerator which was diversified to Silent Knight upright models which ran on gas or electricity.

Knighted in 1952, he is believed to have donated in excess of A$4 million to philanthropic causes during his lifetime, directing much of his fortune to Sydney’s Taronga Park Zoo, becoming a trustee and later its chairman.
