Queensland’s new shield laws partially protect journalists
Queensland journalists will be protected from having to reveal their confidential sources in court as the Queensland government introduced shield laws into the parliament today.
The proposed laws before parliament would apply only to proceedings before a court, where those practising journalism would be able to refuse to identify a source in certain circumstances.
Queensland was the only jurisdiction in Australia not to have shield laws in place.
Attorney General Shannon Fentiman said the laws protect Queenslanders who come forward with important information, as well as journalists.
“We know how important shield laws are to ensure a free, independent and effective media and that really supports our democracy here in Queensland.
“It has taken Queensland a little longer than every other jurisdiction but I am really pleased we’ve been able to introduce these laws today.”
