Revealed: Brisbane’s slowest, most congested roads come at a cost
The eye-watering costs of traffic congestion for south-east Queenslanders has been revealed, with traffic levels returning to pre-COVID-19 levels.
Motorists are sometimes travelling at infuriating speeds of 14km/hour in morning peak.
Head of public policy at RACQ, Susan Furze, said the cost of congestion was significant.
“In terms of time, in terms of lost productivity, in terms of emissions, it does cost Queenslanders, in Brisbane RACQ’s monthly October report on the cost of congestion for a number of roads at around $9 million mark for the month,” she told 4BC Drive.
She said Infrastructure Australia estimated the cost around $2.1 billion a year for south-east Queensland, with predictions it could go up to $6 billion by 2031.
Some of the slowest, most congested roads include:
- Moggill Road in the morning peak which gets down to 30km/hr, which also often hits just 17km/hr in the afternoon peak
- Kelvin Grove Road can get down to 14-15km/hr in the morning
- Stanley Street inbound hits around 15-16km/hr in the morning
- On Coronation Drive you can expect to crawl at 17km/hr in the morning
