‘Not a minute to waste’: Why south-east QLD needs to get moving on Olympic plans
The Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games could propel the River City onto the global stage, but a former lord mayor has a message to all levels of government.
Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk was one of the mayors who led the charge to bring the Games to Brisbane.
He said the beauty of having the Games is that it “sets a line in the sand” when projects have to be completed and infrastructure delivered.
“It does seem a long way off, but the reality is, there’s not a minute to waste,” he told Scott Emerson.
“When you’re starting to build towards infrastructure, one of the important points is that it’s infrastructure we are going to need anyway, we are seeing and have seen for some time significant population growth in south-east Queensland, it’s certainly not going to slow down.”
Mr Quirk said the SEQ People Mass Movement study raised two key issues; including the need to improve both road and public transport infrastructure, as well as more short-term accomodation, before the Games.
He said it was important to start now, and there was a lot of planning to be done.
“I just think it’s important every day counts, these days they can slip away … momentum and speed is critical,” he said.
“While it seems a long way off, it will come like a locomotive and be with us before we know where we are.”
