The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has recommended there is no need for a change to the country’s vaccine boosters rollout in light of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron.

Australians become eligible for a booster shot six months after they had their second jab, and two months for severely immunocompromised people.

There’s no evidence to suggest having the vaccine earlier will make a difference.

Infectious diseases expert from the Australian National University, Professor Peter Collignon, said it appeared to be a sensible decision based on the current evidence and information.

“So far, there is no evidence that the vaccines don’t work against all of the variants we’ve had so far, including Omicron.

“Because we are not seeing South African hospitals overwhelmed by vaccinated people, so the implication is people who have been vaccinated, it is protecting them.”
