The government’s promise to the ‘highly anxious’ tourism sector
The tourism industry in Queensland is hopeful for the path ahead but some operators remain “highly anxious” as the Sunshine State re-opened domestic borders today.
CEO of the Queensland Tourism Industry Council, Daniel Gschwind, said they were happy and more optimistic then they had been in a long time.
“We are not completely out of the woods yet but this step is a definitive and important step that the government has taken, and hopefully an indication that we are well and truly on the way now to living with this virus as we must, and we have been told that.”
He said he spoke with the Premier, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath and new Chief Health Officer John Gerrard today to talk about the recovery of the industry.
‘The message was clear, they are hoping to manage this on the basis of the tracking, the vaccination rates, the health system that we have, in a very controlled and targeted way.
“But certainly in our industry there is high anxiety … what does a mean if a case is to detected inside a business?”
