Fraser Coast Mayor tells of ‘heartbreaking’ moment Maryborough’s levee gate failed
Flood waters are receding in Maryborough’s CBD after the Mary River peaked just under 10 metres yesterday.
The Fraser Coast Council put 12 pumps around the CBD after floodwater breached the temporary levee.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour told Spencer Howson it was “heartbreaking” to see the levee fail.
“We spent Saturday building the levee around the CBD area,” he said.
“Nothing with the levee above the ground went wrong what happened is … something failed – a gate, that shouldn’t have failed, failed in the storm water.
“It meant the floodwater came in under the levy and started to flood the town.”
