‘Deeply upsetting’: Popular beachside venue set to be demolished
A popular beachside venue will be razed due to concerns over structural defects.
Moreton Bay Regional Council had made the decision to demolish the Suttons Beach Pavilion in Redcliffe, which also operates as a cafe, bar, takeaway and wedding venue.
The owners of the restaurant had been negotiating with the council, after they were told the lease wouldn’t be renewed.
The restaurant’s owner Oli Thompson said he was emotional after they found out the 1930s art deco will be demolished, despite trying to come up with options to save it and the business.
“It is an old building but I think it’s fair to say, and the council have acknowledged, they’ve neglected it, not maintained it as they should have over the last 20 years,” he told Neil Breen.
He said it was “deeply upsetting” to lose the lifestyle and history, and to tell staff they were out of a job.
