Exclusive: Neil Breen reveals fresh allegation of interference by the Queensland government
Neil Breen has revealed a fresh allegation of political interference from the Queensland government towards the former state archivist.
It revolves around the missing resignation letter of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s former chief of staff David Barbagallo, who resigned in 2019.
He was investigated and cleared of corruption by the Crime and Corruption Commission, although it was found he failed to properly declare his interests while working for the Premier, after a company he co-owned was awarded $267,000 of taxpayer funds to build an app.
“I can reveal that when the state archivist at the time, Mike Summerell, became aware the letter was missing he began an investigation into what happened to it,” Neil said.
“As state archivist, it was his job to make sure every public record – no matter how trivial – was stored safely for at least 7 years.
“He was simply doing his job by looking for the letter.
“But from the moment he raised the matter, all the government did was cover up the loss of the letter.”
Neil said Mr Summerell contacted the Crime and Corruption Commission.
“Now this is where it gets concerning,” Neil said.

There is no indication that the Premier had personally disposed of the record, either accidentally or intentionally.
The Premier responded to the latest allegations in a press conference today and said there was a lot of misinformation.
She rejected the allegation Mr Summerell was blocked in the search for the resignation letter.
Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman said today the matter is historical and has been dealt with.
“We’ve seen absolutely nothing new from the LNP today, just more cheap scoring political points, more mud-throwing.”
