ASIO foils ‘puppeteer’s’ plot to interfere in Australian election
Australia’s spy agency has disrupted a plot by a foreign government to interfere in an Australian election.
A wealthy individual known as the ‘puppeteer’ was working with a foreign agent to fund election candidates.
4BC federal political editor Michael Pachi told Neil Breen while the ASIO director-general did not reveal which election the plot was targeting, it was likely the upcoming federal election.
“Potentially it was China or Russia to try and get candidates elected and then manipulate things once they were elected,” he said.
“Interestingly, Neil, what he did say in that speech is that foreign spies and espionage, that is now becoming more of a problem in Australia than terrorism.”
