Staff shortages leave companies desperate to recruit new employees

Luke Grant

Luke Grant speaks with Leith Van Onselen, Macrobusiness – the ‘Unconventional Economist’, about the jobs situation in Australia on the back of Elizabeth Knight’s piece in the Sydney Morning Herald where she says, “It is a great time to be looking for work and an even greater moment for talented or skilled workers.

But thanks to “candidate sentiment and hesitancy to change roles” workers are not capitalising on the opportunity created by low unemployment and a skills shortage, according to Australia’s largest online employment classified group, Seek.

In turn, Seek’s chief executive Ian Narev puts this inertia down to risk aversion that workers feel in the uncertain COVID recovery economic environment.

Mr Van Onselen gives his take on any risks to the outstanding job numbers and the possible influence from the big Australia advocates.
