The flu season is expected to return in full force this year now that Australia has reopened its international borders to tourists.

The flights carrying tourists have today touched down in the country for the first time in more than 700 days.

Griffith University Virologist Lara Herrero says it’s important the flu vaccine isn’t overlooked as we head into winter.

“In the last two years, because of all our social distancing, closing our borders, we’ve not seen much flu floating around,” she told Sofie Formica.

“The flu has still been circulating, we just haven’t seen it to the levels that we would in our country.

“We need to get our annual flu vaccine and that should start rolling out perhaps as early as late-March but certainly by April and May.”
