Ukraine conflict: The emotional toll for Brisbane’s Ukrainian community
The world has watched on in horror as Russian forces invaded Ukraine, as many tried to flee their country in droves and huddled in underground train stations, while explosions rung out.
Tetiana Povorozniuk, who lives in Brisbane and has family in Kyiv, said she wouldn’t wish it anyone.
She has three brothers, one who is in the army, who has been drafted to fight.
In an emotional interview with Scott Emerson, she described the horror as war breaks out in her home country.
“A few hours ago, while loading his weapons he texted me just to let me know he’s alive,” she said on 4BC Drive.
At the same time, her brother’s five-month-pregnant wife is a maternity hospital downtown, in threatened early labour.
“All of a sudden they started bombing around the hospital so they all been evacuated, at the moment they are hiding in the basement of the hospital.”
Ms Povorozniuk says the sanctions are not enough to stop Russia.
“People shouldn’t think that it does not concern them, it does concern everyone,” she said.
“It’s not just Ukraine that is fighting.”
