The reality is starting to sink in for businesses caught up in the floods as owners return to their store.

A Newstead bakery has estimated losses of around than $150,000 in food.

The Kneadery owner Shannon Kellam told Neil Breen it was “a huge issue” to move food out of coldrooms when the power was cut.

“All the roller-doors and fire doors internally couldn’t be lifted,” he said.

“As of yesterday, we only managed to get the roller-door up, the main roller-door that lets you in, and could allow my van to get out at 7.30 last night.”

Luckily, Mr Kellam said he was able to get in and save his sourdough starter.

“My natural starter is over 140 years old so we got the starter down the stairs last night and got that to one of my coldrooms on another site.”
