Australia can’t attend the G20 Summit in Indonesia later this year if Russian President Vladimir Putin attends, Scott Emerson says.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is putting pressure on the host nation to bar President Putin, saying it would be a “step too far” sitting across the table from him while the US accuses Russia of war crimes in Ukraine.

The 4BC Drive host says it would be hypocritical if Australia attends.

“If Australia opposes the Russian invasion of Ukraine, how can we attend the G20 meeting in Indonesia in November if Vladimir Putin is invited?” he said.

“Russia claims that Putin had already been invited to the summit and plans to attend.

“That’s something that Indonesia, which hosts the G20 presidency, has denied.

“Scott Morrison is ramping up pressure on Indonesia to exclude Vladimir Putin from the summit in Bali.

“But what should we do if the historically non-aligned Indonesia does decide to invite Putin to the summit?

“No doubt, Putin would seize the opportunity to attend.”

Professor of Ukrainian Studies at Monash University, Marko Pavlyshyn, says it was absolutely appropriate that other countries call for the exclusion of Russia from the summit.

“Yes it is absolutely correct for our Prime Minister to express his refusal to sit at the same table with Putin.”
