An urban Rockhampton street is now one of the country’s most natural disaster-proof  after homes were transformed in a one-of-a-kind experiment.

Under the next phase of Suncorp’s ‘One House’, a string of homes on ‘Resilience Road’ have been upgraded with features designed to protect against extreme weather.

The homes were fortified against cyclones with wind-resistant garage doors, screens and roofing while ember guards were installed to protect against fires.

Suncorp spokesperson Bernadette Norrie told Neil Breen the street demonstrates how practical measures can protect homes against extreme weather.

“It’s really subtle,” she said. “One of the most common things we did to the homes was install gutter guards.

“We know these upgrades, they’re not silver bullets by any means and we can’t avoid that extreme weather but it’s all about helping to protect Queensland homes.”
