Queenslanders are being urged to to get vaccinated against the flu, as authorities warn of a significant wave over the winter months.

Already 800 infections have been reported, almost three times more than the state had in 2021.

In the last couple of weeks, there have been reports of 12 Queenslanders contracting influenza and COVID at the same time.

For them, their illness is more severe.

Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerard warning that because of a less severe flu season over the last 2 years, immunity will be down, warning of a “significant wave” of the flu over winter.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says she’s concerned about those contracting both viruses.

“We are preparing for this, there is no doubt this will put further pressure on our system,” she said.

“Mostly I am concerned about the individuals who are going to contract COVID and the flu at the same time, we know that that can be life-threatening.”
