It’s been 82 years since it opened, so it’s time for the Story Bridge to get a bit of a makeover.

Brisbane City Council’s restoration project is well underway to give it a makeover and a fresh coat of paint in two stages.

Councillor Andrew Wines, who is also the civic cabinet chair for the infrastructure committee, says people might be able to see the work happening around the Story Bridge Hotel.

“At the moment we are working underneath the bride and on the pillars to work on the metal surfaces of the structure itself, to strip them back, clean them, repair them if necessary and then repaint them.”

Cr Wines described it as the “most important and iconic structure” in the city, carrying 100,000 cars a day.

He says the whole process will take 10 years.

Asked about the final cost, he estimated $130 million over 10 years.
