Brisbane is in the grip of a cockroach plague amid unusually warm May weather.

The insects would usually wait out the winter in eggs hidden in the nooks and crannies of a home.

Queensland Museum’s Curator of Entomology Christine Lambkin says this month’s weather have created ideal conditions for first-stage cockroaches to emerge from eggs earlier than expected.

She said they may only be three millimetres long but will be noticeable scurrying around the house.
