Why pilots are pushing back on aircraft noise reduction demands

One of the biggest election promises in Brisbane could already be falling apart as a key group resists change.

The Greens took Griffith with a major policy to tackle the noise from planes flying in and out of Brisbane Airport.

But pilots aren’t onboard with the plan, which would see more planes diverted over Moreton Bay with a tailwind landing limit increased from five to seven knots.

Australian Airline Pilots’ Association President Tony Lucas told Neil Breen it’s a matter of maintaining their safety margin.

The current runway configuration allows pilots to take off and land with a headwind, which is more preferable than a tailwind.

“When we’re landing towards a headwind, it means we’ve got a lower ground speed and ideally, that’s what we’re after,” Captain Lucas explained.

“It means we use less runway, we use less thrust on take-off and less reverse-thrust on landing.

“It certainly gives us an increased safety margin.”
