David Littleproud will become the next leader of the National Party after a marathon showdown in the party room.

The Member for Maranoa was previously deputy to outgoing leader Barnaby Joyce.

Senator Perin Davey will be his deputy.

The Nationals gathered around 10am in Canberra today to resolve a three-way leadership contest following the Coalition’s crushing defeat at the federal election.

Former leader Barnaby Joyce, David Littleproud and Darren Chester each jostled for the position after large swings were recorded against the party in some electorates.

The Liberal Party earlier confirmed former defence minister Peter Dutton has been elected to lead with Sussan Ley his deputy.

Mr Dutton has pledged to take the party back to its conservative roots and represent the “forgotten people” of Australia.

Both Mr Dutton and Ms Ley ran for their positions unopposed.
