There’s a super-sized headache in store for Australia with the majority of adults not on track to achieve a comfortable retirement.

The average couple is estimated to need $640,000 in their superannuation accounts to have a comfortable retirement while singles would ideally have $545,000.

They’re ballpark figures based on a future pre-tax wage income of just under $65,000 a year and that there is no mortgage or rent to factor in.

Superannuation Funds of Australia Deputy CEO Glen McCrea told Sofie Formica it’s not just an issue for older Australians who made lower contributions in superannuation’s infancy.

“A bit of a challenge for the younger generations is a lot of them took money out with early release,” he said.

“There’s about a million people who have less than a thousand dollars.”

He said by 2050, just 50 per cent of Australians will be on track to reach the comfortable standard.
