Wallabies to battle for trophy named in Ella’s honour as sport moves on from Cook Cup
The Wallabies and England will play for a trophy named after Indigenous rugby great Mark Ella and an English war hero after ditching the Cook Cup.
On the eve of England’s three-Test tour of Australia, Rugby Australia and the Rugby Football Union have agreed to scrap the quarter-century-old trophy named after Captain James Cook.
The Sydney Morning Herald chief rugby reporter Georgina Robinson told Neil Breen the new Ella-Mobbs trophy will represent a new era of rugby.
“I think it’s fine to move with the times,” she said. “There was a lot of bad, negative fallout to his arrival as well.”
