The Ipswich Mayor is seeing red after a council decision to remove disgraced former mayor Paul Pisasale’s name from city assets was successfully overturned. 

Pisasale’s former deputy Paul Tully led the charge, with five of nine councillors yesterday voting to keep Pisasale Drive in Yamanto and Paul Pisasale Bridge in Springfield named as is.

Mr Tully argued social media comments showed there was a lot of support to keep the bridge and street as they are.

It comes after Pisasale was sentenced to 7.5 years behind bars in 2020 for more than 30 serious crimes, including official corruption, extortion and sexual assault.

Mayor Teresa Harding, who voted to oppose the motion, told Mark Levy she’s horrified by what this says to the women of Ipswich.

“It’s a very sad day,” she said. “Our residents are going to have to pay thousands of dollars to have his name put [back] on that bridge.

“I’m the first female mayor that our city’s ever had … and to stand there and say I’m going … to put a convicted criminal’s name back on the bridge is unfathomable.

“It’s ridiculous, Mark. Just ridiculous.”
