Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath is imploring Queenslanders to get a COVID-19 booster, as Australia’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout is being expanded.

The federal government will offer a fourth dose to anyone over the age of 30, from Monday.

Ms D’Ath said she understands vaccine fatigue, but to keep people out of hospital or seriously ill, it’s worth being up to date.

“The simple fact is, we know that two does is not enough against Omicron and the sub variants we have seen out of that,” she told Peter Fegan on 4BC Drive.

“Last year, two jabs were fine, that certainly would help us with Delta, but all of the evidence is it’s not enough for Omicron.”

Around 49 per cent of people aged 65 and over had had their fourth dose in Queensland.

She said the latest data from the Chief Health Officer Dr John Gerrard shows people are four times more likely to get the new variants of BA.4 and BA.5 if you are over 65 and not up to date with your booster jabs.

“That’s a pretty big incentive who those who are in the more vulnerable groups to go off and get their boosters.”
