Queensland MP elected as new speaker of federal parliament
Both sides of politics have today welcomed Milton Dick as the new speaker of the federal parliament.
The Oxley MP will oversee the running of parliament and will remove himself from Labor caucus meetings to ensure impartiality.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has told parliament he’s confident Mr Dick will make a great speaker.
“We didn’t elect just one party, we elected a range of people to this House and to the Senate and those views need to be able to be heard and heard in a way which produces better outcomes.
“Your role is to ensure that happens as well, in an orderly way.”
Congratulations @MiltonDickMP on your appointment to Speaker of the House of Representatives. I know you will bring dignity, honesty and professionalism to the role.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton was confident Mr Dick would follow in the footsteps of previous speakers.
“I pay tribute to your predescessors, as I say, but the standard has now been set by the Member for Casey and we expect big things of you.”
