Gas crisis sparks ACCC warnings

Michael speaks with Professor Bruce Mountain from the Victoria Energy Policy Centre, following the ACCC’s warning that gas exporters were putting jobs and businesses at risk from massive price hikes and ­record east coast shortages next year, the largest supply shortfall of domestic gas since 2017, while encouraging LNG exporters to immediately increase their supply into the market.

The ACCC’s report has raised concerns about the high level of market concentration, noting that LNG exporters and associates had influence over almost 90 per cent of the proven and probable reserves in the east coast in 2021 through direct interests, joint ventures and exclusivity arrangements.
