Brisbane City Council says crews have been working all day to mend a weak point on a road in the city, that caused major delays on the morning commute into work.

The emergency roadworks brought the CBD to a standstill, with a major thoroughfare shut down.

Adelaide Street was closed between North Quay and George Street since the early hours of this morning due to “road subsidence”.

Some commuters had to get off their buses and walk the rest of their way to work.

Court proceedings were even delayed as magistrates and lawyers were caught in the traffic.

The council says it’s been repaired, and there should be no delays this afternoon.

Brisbane Civic Cabinet Chair for Transport Ryan Murphy says tunnelling works for the Brisbane Metro project were to blame for the delays.

“This decision was made for safety reasons after a contractor reported an issue with tunnelling works,” he said. “Thankfully no one was injured.”

Neil Breen says South Brisbane is a “train wreck”.

He says it was unacceptable that the council only released a short statement with no further detail on whether there was a safety issue.

“When the entire city is locked down today because of this incident, a couple of line statement saying oh things are ok, thankfully no one was hurt its unacceptable to me, there needs to be more from council about why and how.”

Brisbane Council opposition leader Jared Cassidy says he first heard of an issue with tunnelling works a while back.
