The NRL grand final could be played in different Australian cities like the Super Bowl if NSW loses the premiere sporting event over a bitter row.

Chairman of the Australian Rugby League Commission Peter V’landys is not backing down from a threat to move the showpiece elsewhere in 2022 over an ongoing dispute with the NSW government.

Brisbane is poised to snare the grand final if an agreement isn’t reached.

“We’d like to give our fans as much notice as possible, so we will make a decision in the next week, possibly by the end of this week,” Mr V’landys told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.

Asked about whether Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium would face opposition from Melbourne’s MCG or Optus Stadium in Perth, he said he expects there would be competition to host the event.

“Look they probably would have a crack at it,” he said.

“If we did go down this path, it opens us up the opportunity to do it like a Super Bowl, where we have it as a destination event in particular city in Australia which promotes the game and also promotes tourism in that state.”

He said he was hopeful the NSW government “abides by its agreement”.
