A squad of biosecurity officers will be deployed in Queensland to protect the livestock industry from the threat of foot and mouth disease. 

The state government has announced plans to spend $22 million in biosecurity measures, including training 10 new dedicated frontline officers.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the biosecurity officers, skilled in disease protection strategies and specialised emergency responses, will be strategically located throughout rural Queensland.

Other measures will include further support for the state’s emergency animal disease preparedness team and a boost to feral pig control capabilities.

Agricultural Minister Mark Furner said while the state is currently free from foot and mouth disease, preparation is crucial.

“The current outbreaks in Indonesia are causing considerable concern but industry groups are telling us they have confidence in their biosecurity measures,” he said.

“Queensland faces significant biosecurity risks and protecting our agriculture industry, communities and great lifestyle is vital.”
