‘Serious questions’ around top cop’s position after disturbing allegations
Katarina Carroll’s suitability as police commissioner is being called into question after she admitted to “significant” misogyny issues within the force.
The Commissioner is being taken to task for not publicly calling out sexist comments made by senior staff and potentially overstating capabilities of a new DV command in 2021.
In one incident at a senior leaders’ conference, a superintendent yelled out from the crowd, “did she shut her legs on you?”, after the master of ceremonies joked a visible facial injury was from a “rough promotional process”.
Ms Carroll yesterday denied there is a widespread cultural issue but acknowledged a problem with misogynist and racist officers in an intense grilling at the Commission of Inquiry into QPS Responses to Domestic and Family Violence.
But shadow minister for the prevention of domestic, family and sexual violence Amanda Camm insisted to Mark Levy the findings point to “a significant cultural issue”.
“What we’ve heard in the last few days and the evidence that’s been presented, I think does point to a major issue when it comes to culture.
“I think when it comes to culture, it starts at the top and we have a Police Minister who we’ve yet to hear from.”
Mark suggested the extent of the revelations may mean the Commissioner’s position is no longer tenable but Ms Camm wouldn’t be drawn in.
“It’s not for me to judge the Commissioner’s performance; I think that is left to others.”
She acknowledged that Ms Carroll found some aspects of police culture appalling and had an “appropriate response”.
“But to then hear evidence as well, where I think the Commissioner could go a lot further, that’s a matter for her, that’s a matter for the Minister.”

Mark Levy reiterated his doubts as to whether Katarina Carroll should continue on as commissioner.
“The Commissioner was taken to task for not publicly calling out lewd and inappropriate comments made by senior staff.
“I think there’s serious questions on whether or not Katarina Carroll can continue as the police commissioner if she’s not going to call it out at the time it was happening.”
