Cameron Smith has jumped ship to join the controversial LIV Golf Tour.

The 29-year-old from Brisbane has been linked to the organisation for months but his move from the PGA was finally confirmed in a host of announcements made overnight by the Saudi-backed tour.

He will make his debut at a September 2-4 event held at the International Golf Club outside Boston in the US.

Smith has confirmed financial benefits played a role in his decision to join the breakaway tour.

Wide World of Sports host Peter Psaltis told Laurel, Gary & Mark the LIV Golf Tour is becoming more legitimised as stars sign on.

“The only reason why it’s so controversial is because of the Saudi-backed nature of it,” he said.

“I don’t know whether I’m reading the room or not, but I’m starting to think people are becoming more accepting of the fact that this isn’t just a flash in the pan.

“It is now a fair dinkum tour that is changing the face of golf.”
