Australians to train on UK nuclear subs under landmark pact
Australian naval officers will train inside Britain’s nuclear-powered submarines for the first time under a landmark agreement.
Defence Minister Richard Marles is set to announce the pact at a press conference with the UK Secretary of State in England today.
The deal will allow Australian crew to access sensitive technology to prepare them for the eventual arrival of nuclear submarines under the AUKUS pact.
Mr Marles is expected to stress that the deal with does not indicate Australia is leaning toward Britain when it decides whether to acquire nuclear submarines from the US or UK.
The US Congress is considering a similar bill that would allow Australian submariners to join their American counterparts for training and operations.
