Couple’s narrow escape as ute ploughs into Hemmant home

A Hemmant couple have narrowly escaped serious injury after a ute ploughed into their bayside home overnight.
Len Schultz and his wife, Joy, were asleep in their bedroom when the vehicle crashed into the home, missing their bed by just a metre.
He told Laurel, Gary & Mark the damage was so bad, he had to pull a security screen off and climb out a window to escape the bedroom.
“Everything was just crushed there and there was a wall between the hallway and our bedroom,” he said.
“It was just taken away completely and also on the other side of that wall was covered in sliding glass doors.”

Police believe the ute collided with a parked car on Macedon Street first, before ricocheting into the home.
The 25-year-old driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries and will undergo blood and urine tests.
“They do believe there could be some sort of factor there but they’re not saying at this stage what it could be,” Today reporter Mia Glover told Laurel, Gary & Mark.
The SES have been working through the night to set up tarps and hydraulics to prevent the roof caving in.
