‘An awful lot of work to be done’: Fred Hollows Foundation marks 30 years
It’s been 30 years since Fred Hollows set out on his vision to help anyone, no matter where they live, from going needlessly blind.
His vision led to The Fred Hollows Foundation, which has now restored sight to more than 3 million people but there’s “still an awful lot of work to be done”.
“There are about 43 million people in the world who are blind,” the foundation’s communications director, Alison Hill told Sofie Formica. “We are making really good inroads.
“We’ve got a really important program here in Australia, particularly in remote communities, helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“It’s a truly global organisation. When Fred was about, we were working in around three or four countries and now in more than 25 around the world.”
