Queen’s memorial public holiday a headache for retailers
There’s confusion among retailers today after the Prime Minister announced a public holiday to mark the Queen’s death.
A National Day of Mourning has been declared for September 22, when a memorial service will be held in Canberra.
But retailers are asking for further clarification from Canberra on trading conditions for the one-off holiday.
National Retailers Association operations manager Daniel Frost-Foster told Sofie Formica there’s a lot of costs business owners will need to factor in.
“Many of the factors that impact small businesses include operational hours, especially because Thursday is actually late-night trade,” he said.
“But you’ve also got rostering of staff, penalty rates, stock logistical issues, the rescheduling of appointments in industries such as the hair and beauty and hospitality sector.
“What we’re asking for from the government is that we need certainty so we can make the 22nd as clear as possible to businesses.”
