The Courier Mail has announced the newspaper will no print comic strips, much to the dismay of the industry.

In a small article in the paper today, the Courier Mail said the decision was based on “extensive research into changing readership habits”.

It will not impact the editorial cartoonists, Brett Lethbridge and Sean Leahy.

Neil Breen revealed when he was editor of the Sunday Telegraph he had to make a call to axe some of the 12 cartoon strips.

He said the paper got the most complaints in its history after that decision.

Australian Cartoonists Association president Cathy Wilcox said she hoped dismayed readers spoke up.

“I am hoping there might be a bit of blowback, we have been trying to make a little bit of noise about this we first heard about it, from some of the members of the cartoonists association.”

She said she was saddened for the cartoonists and what it brings to the paper.

It’s believed around five cartoonists based in Australia were impacted.
