For for the first time since he stepped away from the microphone and into retirement back in 2013, broadcast legend and 4BC stalwart Greg Cary has visited the studio once more.

A familiar voice and name on the 4BC airwaves, Mr Cary left 4BC back in 2013 to spend time on his farm.

He’s also penned a memoir, called An Absence of Certainty.

It’s a journey of his life, his time in radio and life after his career.

Radio, he says, remains as important as ever.

“As you know there’s been so much change in that period, but you know radio retains that almost unique capacity to be a friend,” he told Sofie Formia in an in-depth chat on 4BC Afternoons.

“Whilst here’s so much change in the media … I think radio prospers on that relationship.”

He said it’s a great thrill to see his published book in book stores.

Asked what he learnt about himself through writing the book, he said it’s difficult to pinpoint.

“Such a good question,” he said.

“I think when you are writing a memoir about one life .. my aim was to perhaps relate to the lives of a lot of people who might read this book.

“It’s the life of this city and this state from 1980 onwards when I first arrived here, it’s all the events from Expo, the international events, all the things we went through, they are my observations.”

In the memoir, Mr Cary talks about his own sexual abuse as a child.

“I hope it might help one or two others as well.”
