Gai Waterhouse will attend Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in the UK on Monday.

Gai and Robert Waterhouse were invited to the funeral by Lord Chamberlain Andrew Parker, and will join the Prime Minister, Governor-General David Hurley and four Pacific leaders on the journey to London tonight.

Ms Waterhouse had a long connection with the Queen and is one of only three Australian trainers to have looked after the keen owner’s horses when they raced here.

Among the horses she trained was Carlton House.

“She was always very charming, always funny, she sounded more like a teenage girl,” Ms Waterhouse said.

“Always interested in her horses, she was marvelous.”
