Urgent warning for pet owners as potentially deadly tick season kicks off early
There’s an urgent warning for pet owners in Queensland to be on the lookout for signs of a tick bite, with experts warning tick season has kicked off early.
There’s been a spike in numbers of pets requiring treatment for the potentially deadly tick paralysis.
RSPCA Queensland’s Emma Lagoon said the rainy, wet weather has meant the season has started earlier than normal.
“It is a big issue this time of year, because were seeing this wet weather and warn temperatures, ticks are certainly out in force and we are seeing a rise in cases,” she told Bill McDonald, filling in on 4BC Afternoons.
“In the last week, it has really picked up in the RSPCA.”
She said two cats are in intensive care, a puppy is recovering and a dog up north died from tick paralysis.
Their advice is to check their pets daily for lumps and bumps, and watch out for symptoms.
